Special Projects: Classic Scientific Glassblowing
This is a diazomethane distillation apparatus, and it is a good illustration of scientific glassblowing. One can see a number of aspects that make glass so appropriate for general chemistry: addition, heating, cooling, measuring, valving, collection, etc.
This glassware generates diazomethane from Aldrich's compound Diazald. An interesting aspect of this construction is that it requires tapered joints that are NOT ground, as illustrated in the detail below. There is a hazard with diazomethane; contact with rough or sharp surfaces may cause diazomethane to explode. The joints are called "Clear-Seal®" (reg. Wheaton Scientific); they're formed to exact matching tapers but are not ground.
