Special Projects: Glass cell for medicinal research
This little piggy arose via an internet inquiry from a university engineering and medical school collaboration studying the genesis of arteries. A collagen tube containing live heart-valve cells is sutured between the two inner ends of the two axial tubes. The entire unit is filled with artificial blood, which also flows through the collagen tube. As the cells grow, it is possible to measure how they respond to flow and how much they block arteries. The axial tubes can be adjusted in or out as necessary in the threaded glass fittings. Their outboard ends have glass 1/4-28 male threads, which is a standard connection for small tubing. The lid is a plate with nubs to stop it from sliding. The feet have a wide stance for stability.
